Small Group Counseling
The FFMS Counseling Department facilitates many small groups based in resiliency, The Why Try curriculum, and the Dove Self Esteem Project. Other small groups may include academic support groups or lunch bunch groups.
Resiliency
Resiliency is defined as a stable personality trait or ability which protects the individual form the negative effects of risk and adversity. It is a process that evolves over time and is a normal part of healthy development. It is a process in which the individual makes the most of resources to overcome adversity by adapting. Resilient children take responsibility for their decisions, understand and accept their abilities and limitations are goal directed and realistic, have a positive outlook, and have developed coping and stress reduction strategies. It is fostered through positive thinking, appropriate emotional awareness and development of individual talents, facilitating social competence and the ability to handle stress. The reason some children succeed when faced with risks and adversity is resiliency
Why Try
The WhyTry Program is a resilience education curriculum that provides simple, hands-on solutions for dropout prevention, violence prevention, truancy reduction, and increased academic success.The idea is straightforward: Teach social and emotional principles to youth in a way they can understand and remember. WhyTry is based on sound empirical principles, including solution-focused brief therapy, social and emotional intelligence, and multisensory learning.
The WhyTry curriculum utilizes a series of ten visual analogies that teach important life skills (e.g., decisions have consequences; dealing with with peer pressure; obeying laws and rules; plugging in to support systems).

Dove Self Esteem Project: Confident Me!
Our Confident Me body confidence teaching materials explore influences on young people’s body image and self-esteem.
The self-esteem workshops address key topics, including the impact of society and professional and social media on appearance ideals, and give you strategies to boost students' confidence.
Five lessons, through discussions, group activities, engaging videos, and activity worksheets, the lessons covers:
• Unrealistic appearance ideals
• The impact of social media, celebrity culture, and advertising
• How to reduce appearance-focused conversations and comparisons
• Body activism and positive behavior change
Research shows that students who attend the five lesson workshops have improved body image and higher self-esteem, and feel more confident participating in social and academic activities.
